No one is wise without books.

Gevul Binyamin

Our book discussion group, IDEAS THROUGH BOOKS, promises an exceptionally provocative and eye-opening meeting this month. Rabbi Herbert Baumgard will review The Origin of Satan by Elaine Pagels (Vintage Books, 1995), a work that attempts to conceptualize evil and trace its evolutionary development in Christianity. How did the Jewish depiction of this agent of God who tests the faithful become the New Testament’s Prince of Darkness? Join us for an insightful and intriguing discussion led by a true Biblical scholar.

DATE: Sunday, December 15th

PLACE: Temple Beth Am Library

TIME: 10:00 A.M.

TITLE: The Origin of Satan by Elaine Pagels

RESERVATIONS: Required! Please call the Library and let us know how many to expect.

The theme for Jewish Book Month (November 6 – December 6) is Education and Continuity, and in that regard the library is displaying a special exhibit of fairy tales and folklore– the stories one generation tells another. An eleventh-century poet sang:

He who has toiled and bought for himself books,

But his heart is empty of what the contain–

Is like a lame man, who engraved on a wall

The figure of a foot, and tried to stand in vain.

Samuel Ha-Nagid, 993-1055, Granda

Temple Beth Am’s Library is a source of entertainment and enlightenment for our schools, congregation and community. Our collection includes books, videos, audio cassettes, Cd-rom’s, and periodicals — covering a range of interests from easy readers to scholarly tomes. We offer full Internet access, as well as connection to subscription services, such as Hasafran, the on-line discussion group of the Association of Jewish Libraries, and we are open for a part of every day, seven days a week.

Librarian Etta D. Gold [e-mail] has been awarded the title of RJE in recognition of her many years in Jewish education. She also holds a Masters in Library and Information Science and serves as president of the South Florida Chapter of the Association of Jewish Libraries, which includes Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County.
